"Everything done, has been done before. Hunger for power and thirst for war... but I know that I'm on my way. I'll never loose my faith and never let faith make a hole in my soul... Must we destroy what we dont understand, all of these labels man-made by man. Bad times have past, bad times will come but I know that I'm on my way. Who do I believe in, I believe in me. Worship at the shrine of the human body. Who do I pray to, think i'll pray for you. Have faith in the good things that good humans can do!!!"
... sings Jeff Beck. Incredible song!
Womens rights, new presidencies and you - IN ACTION!!! Don't forget you, who you are, what do you believe, have faith in the good things that Humans can do - that's you! So what is it that you want to do. Remember last week, we were dreaming. This week many of us globally have been actioning or at least standing up and uniting in a voice for equality in the things we believe in and that means having faith in all humans and in you. Feeling the pain and discomfort, speaking the truth, studying and then uniting to create positive change for all humanity, beyond the Self. This is YOGA!
A recent Guardian article had some words of wisdom regarding the womens walk prior to its march and one of which was to know and understand your history... and for women to "take matters into their own hands, act unexpectedly and viscerally, and focus their collective energy on the only target that matters: concretely establishing the power of the people".
Following the Bristol March Organisers of the event said: "We stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families - recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our planet."
I was there marching in Queens Square, and it was indeed as Twitter highlighted, Beautiful, Positive, Peaceful, United and Creative!!!! There was strength, there was hope, there was empowerment and their was One Love!
I found inspiration in every movement of the weekends events and it resonated with my idea of Yoga in Action and that in itself is a process of understanding the Self and transmitting that outwards, beyond the Self. Therefore, we look to understand Kriya Yoga, comprising of Tapas, Svadhyaya and Isvara pranidhanam. Last week we touched upon Tapas and its meaning to create heat, to breathe in pain and discomfort to enable us to fully be aware of feeling this and transforming that in to compassion. Such like gold, the more it fires the purer it becomes. Tapas also relates to self-discipline and the nature of the mind accepting pain, as opposed to running after pleasure. This makes the mind steady and strong, as we come to know its purifying effects, as we begin to practice facing discomforts. Next comes tranquility of speech, that should be truthful, pleasant and beneficial. Vedic teachings say "Satyam bruit prism bruit" Speak what is true, speak what is pleasant.
Following these practices of Kriya Yoga, Svadhyaya comes next! It means 'study' that concerns the true Self, not merely analysing the mind and emotions as modern day psychologists do. This is the study of things that elevate you from the mind and uplift you. 'The Yoga Sutras' of Patanjali and the 'Bhagavad Gita' are two yogic texts that are considered to do this for us Yogis, through the study of these books. It is not simply being studious that educates us and embeds knowledge that we can transcend, it means studying from the heart and embodying each word to understand its meaning. Each time we read these texts, we may begin to see a little more, rising up, enlarging and expanding the mind. BUT nothing can equal experience. We can hear, study and have opinions and imagine but its the experience that allows us to become it! "You cannot fully understand how a snake crawls unless you become a snake." By theory alone we can not understand the Self. We may transcend the mind to understand, to exit its limitations and conditioning, and then begin to enter the unlimited.
This is Yoga in action!
By experiencing the art of living your Yoga, you may make it less about you and your mind and your body, and begin to finally dedicate your practice and your experience of being in the world to something bigger than yourself. Dedication IS TRUE yoga. Let us dedicate our lives to the sake of the entire humanity. With every breath, with every atom of our bodies we should repeat this mantra to keep the mind free from disturbances and to bring peace and joy, says Patanjali:
"DEDICATION, DEDICATION, GIVING, GIVING, LOVING, LOVING".
ON OUR MATS THIS WEEK AND AS YOU STEP OUT IN TO THE WORLD... We may set our intentions as dedications and use our Yoga practice to Uplift. Elevate. AND use the power of Truth and Sound for transformation.
Through Yoga Asana, Meditation, Mantras and Unity with our community (wherever you may be) - lets experience and action our Yoga on and off the mat!
BELIEVE IN YOU AND THE POWER FOR TRANSFORMATION IN US ALL!
