"Like the chambers of the heart, which fill and empty and fill again, we "learn to learn" the rhythm of this Life/ Death/ Life cycle.
The full moon is tonight! So I wonder how you will sleep, what will live and what will die???
Last night I was housesitting for a friend and the beauty was that there was no internet and so what did I do, but read and then my body naturally fell asleep when it was tired. It's a wonderful thing that, the body, naturally switching off when it is tired. I guess this is also what might happen in death too... if we consider the body as a vessel that holds the heart. You never know. Do you? When it naturally will choose to fall in to a permanent sleep. You can take this as a full-on dismal and depressing blog paragraph or you can use it as a motivation and an empowerment. For me, recently and in fact throughout my life, death has been something that I have become very familiar with and through all my studies enhancing this, I don't fear it. Do you? This isn't because I have a faith that there is a better place for me, for you, my family and friends, but in fact, that I simply do not think of death, but I think of life! Cycles. How precious life is and how incredibly magical this thing that we call life is AND its nature. I have been diving back in to the book Women Who Run wth the Wolves and in particular, the story that inspires me currently is that of Baba Yaga. She lets us see all there is to see and carries all the knowledge of the larger soul - Self. She instructs Vasilisa to let die the attitudes within the psyche which no longer sustain her, especially those long-held tenets which make life too safe, which overprotect and make her walk in scurry rather than in stride. Through having to carry out mundane tasks in the art of living, she learns new ways of thinking, being and about the cycles of life and death and becomes a less too-good figure and a more powerful, positive and knowing individual.
These folk stories are told to us as teachings. Teachings in to our own psyche. The psyche. That is a magical thing. But, without connecting to the natural cycles happening all around us in every moment - what is the psyche, but an array of thoughts detached most likely from the body and the cyclical world around us. So where are we now... the full moon is about to present itself and yet what in terms of astrology does that mean? Why is it relevant to you and your yoga? How will you care for your psychic house this season? Sensitivity to what shall die and what shall live? To what shall be carded out? To what shall be woven in? To develop a new way of living with expression, to inhabit what belongs to us innately and choose what serves us best at this time.
Every action begins with strengthening the spirit.
It's time to step forward in FULL COLOUR! What has come before, those things that are now in the past, will burn away in the light of the moon if you choose for them to. The fire that burns is purifying and symbolises the collective burning of ill-will and resentments that have accumulated in relationships, families, and communities over the year. In you.
In India this full moon is celebrated as the festival of colors – Holi, in which participants douse each other with brightly colored powder and paint. But we are not in India - so how will you honour it?!
According to Vedic astrology the full moon falls in the area of the sky (nakshatara), known as Uttara Phalguni. Symbolized by the marriage bed, it is celebrated as the nuptial star of Shiva and Shakti. It has a fertile, sensual energy that sparks creativity and can inspire us to want to deepen our connection to others.
Venus’s current retrograde cycle (March 4 – April 15) sharpens the focus on love and creativity and could break through the ice of long-estranged relationships, apparently. Conversely, Venus may also expose cracks so its a good time to do that Yoga i-D trademark of 'Checking In' with yourself and ask a few questions... Are you giving too much of your time and energy to people and things that fail to meet your needs, here and now? Mars has stepped into the invigorating sign of Aries, pushing us to advance forward and support the rejuvenating growth of spring.
Spring is coming! Spring, the time of year that we naturally begin to clear out and create space for new things to blossom. New beginnings. Things die and new life arrives. It's like magic and its beautiful! The sun comes out and we all slightly awaken from our winters hibernation and with this requires a real authentic checking in with ourselves and our new needs (this is every damn day - every minute) and this takes work.
This time of Holi is packed with new fertile and creative energy.... its wild!
So like the vibrant colours of holi being mixed on a paint palette... explore, enquire and paint your world around you in a way that is vibrant and meet your needs, that makes you fully live in truth and happiness, passionately and with sensuality.
By checking in, we begin to learn to follow our knowing. Nature does not ask permission. It just lives, transforms, grows, blossoms and dies - over and over again. What must die, dies. It might be against our conventions, ideals and often limited perceptions to tune in and identify what must live on and what must die in our own lives, but this knowing we develop means we do not feel surprised when change occurs and we also feel peaceful as we make the decisions and provoke change without the need for permission or rational logical thinking. It becomes an inner knowing that words can often not feel useful in translating the choices we therefore make. It requires taking time to do this, it requires discipline, its requires honesty. It asks of you to be daring, a creator and a destroyer. To become the primitive and investing soul that makes all creative acts and arts possible.
We create a forest around us and begin to deal with life from that fresh and original perspective... A garden has to be turned in the fall in order to prepare it for spring. It cannot bloom all the time. But let your own innate cycles dictate the upsurges and the downward cycles of your life, not other persons or forces outside yourself, nor negative complexes from within.
Many of you reading this, live within our urban Bristol jungle. We know it well. But do you know YOU, within it. What does your forest actually look like for you, compared to me?? It WILL be very different. I move around this city in a very different way to you and likewise. So empower yourself to create a garden for yourself that grows in to a forest of magic and wonder. Of clarity and truth. Of love and passion. Of colour and smells that ignite you in to a Spring of creative and powerful new life.
The Life/ Death/ Death Goddess is always a creator goddess. She makes, fashions, breathes life in to, she is there to receive the soul when the breath has run out.
As adults in the year 2017, this all may sound very abstract to you as you tumble around life, accepting conventions and that while you have elements of security (illusions) that you have already created you are safe, you are living. But are you really? Maybe you need to think about how you may live more fully, with knowing. Maybe this needs encouragement and maybe this needs vision. Develop both. Encourage and visualise. Good boundaries are still important, as is being real and allowing, shutting off the ego for a while and letting that which wishes to speak, speak.
Lets move, breathe, love and feel in to our notions in and around our creative, sensual, spiritual and intellectual life to elicit your original best. Lets make it our purpose to help. care and reattach ourselves to the wildish instincts we embody and restore the intuitive life cycle within. Carry the blaze of knowing, with fierce senses, hear, see, smell and taste things out.
Listen to the inner seeing, the inner hearing, the inner being. The inner knowing. It knows. Follow it. Remain in charge of the fiery light that shines, sees and knows truth. Reduce that negative part of the psyche to a cinder. A dot. A bindi. A spec of light!
With this light the miracles of deep beauty in the world and in humans come to consciousness. With this penetrating light one can see past the bad action to the good heart, one can espy the sweet spirit crushed beneath hatred, one can understand much instead of being perplexed only. This light can differentiate layers of personality, intention and motives in others. It can determine consciousness and unconsciousness in self and others. It is the wand of knowing. It is the mirror in which all things are sensed and seen. It is the deep wild nature.
With your feet placed firmly, with your body open and sensually inline, coalesce all your power and begin to see the world now and your life through this new light. Lets see what then manifests :)
On (and off) the Yoga mat this week, we will explore all of the above and work to shine a new light on our meditative psyches, our physical asana practice and translate that back out in to our lives, the world we live in, knowing that they are inseparable.
