I'm back! This week teaching again in Bristol - Hooray - I've missed you!
Life is so much about keeping all the balls in the air - isn't it? With two small kids, working as a Yoga Teacher as well as a Creative Producer and Stylist, not only do I keeps balls up in the air but I change hats too and sometimes I must prioritise one over the other, in order to not let all the balls fall to the ground and over extend myself. Managing relationships of all kinds, maintaining a house, paying the bills and then, most importantly, keeping a sense of well-being and health, is a challenge (for all of us). Even the addition of having a gold fish in our house was unfortunately not possible to maintain, I realised. How do we do it eh?
I love this video so much, as what this demonstrates is the slowing down. It captures dancers fast motion movements, in slow motion and it also shows the flexion and the extension that occurs as we move. I often wish that I could do this with my life, where I could press a button and allow it all to move slower, and see how I flex and extend myself in more ways than one.
In Yoga, we have the magic button!
We also gain clarity of mind to make choices that allow us to stay in balance. I am so grateful for this practice and to offer my understanding of it to you.
So last week, I took the week off to rest, restore, do lots of self practice and to get all the balls back up in the air in a way that complimented being back in Bristol, to regain a steady pace of life (not running off of adrenaline) and to centre. I allowed myself the slower pace to see the flex and the extension that life was asking of me and to now have gained that understanding, it feels great!
THIS WEEK - Guess what? YOGA IS BACK ON WITH ME! And I'm ready for you more than ever. I am ready to offer you some assistance in finding your clarity and the beauty of being back in the body.
Get ready to explore the body, to centre and to connect. My health and my understanding of what I am capable of and what I am needing now, has changed again recently, and it brought awareness to the fact that for some of you, it would have to. As time goes by, and with age and life experiences, we experience change in each and every moment and it's important to go back to the body and to receive it just as it is now and to enquire as to what it is capable of and to work with it, not against it. Our Yoga practice should enhance our sense of well-being, health on both a physical and mental plane, and assist you in gaining clarity and space, to slow down, to connect. This of course, applies on and off the mat.
The decisive moment of a dance extension is a wondrous sight but it’s over in an instant. What if this instant in time could be extended or elongated? ‘extension’ was born of this idea.
In class, we shall make an enquiry to our bodies by exploring extension. We will look to make extensions in the body and to elongate the breath in our practice to see if we can extend time, space and life force. By getting to know the body you can begin to develop a deeper sense of understanding the self through the body, as well as the quality of compassion.
In traditional anatomy and kinesiology (the study of how the body moves), we describe all movement in terms of the three cardinal planes, viewing the body in the anatomical position (fully upright with the arms by the sides and the palms facing forward). Any movements that occur in or parallel to this plane are referred to as either flexion or extension.
As we practice Yoga each and every day we come to realise that there is no separation in all our experiences. If we rush around, if we don't slow down, if we run off of adrenal and if we take no time to connect with understanding the self in each and every changing moment - we become disconnected, we become overwhelmed, we live through the obstacles that life presents and we miss out on the beauty of what lives now. Oneness!
Heres a little celebratory song for you. Its 'POP' and its joyful. Enjoy. mWOAH.
See you in class for less pop and more YOGA!
